29, 2018 and the Cadet Golf Classic on the ensuing day, Monday, April 30.
The featured speaker of the Patriot Dinner was Ginger Gilbert Ravella, widow of Air Force Major Troy Gilbert, who was killed in combat on Nov. 27, 2006 while flying an F-16 in Iraq. Gilbert sacrificed his life on his 22nd Iraq mission while saving more than 20 Special Operation soldiers. His remains were initially stolen by al Qaeda fighters, who pulled Gilbert’s body from the F-16 wreckage, rolled it up in a carpet and stashed it inside a truck. Since that day more than a decade ago, Major Gilbert’s remains were returned in bits and pieces. In December 2016, he became the first person, according to the records of Arlington National Cemetery, ever to be buried in the nation’s most hallowed grounds three times. He left behind five children, all under the age of 9, at the time of his death. Ginger’s openly genuine testimony of wrestling with God in the midst of despair and depression was an inspiring and gripping tale of courageous triumph in the aftermath of heart-wrenching tragedy.
The 2018 Patriot Dinner also included a presentation by Brigadier General Joe Ramirez, the Commandant of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets. During his 31 years of military service, General Ramirez commanded soldiers around the world and served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for United States Central Command during Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
